30 DECEMBER GAME RECAP: REVENGE OF THE ROOSTERS:

After complete embarrassment the prior week,Roosters roared back in typical barn yard fashion. After jumping out to an early 5 run lead, Roosters allowed complacency to creep in and watched their lead dissapate. The larger field helped the Roosters as the park held three long balls off the bat of Evilio, Jr. and one monster shot by Jeff Weill that was hauled in at the fence by Garito. During the game, Rooster flipped rounding first and Huston flopped in center chasing a fly ball. Going into the bottom of the final inning, Tigers owned 20-16 lead. A Roosters rally quickly made it 20-18 but two were out. With the game on the line, Rooster  promptly lined a single to left adding one run. Jake followed with a hot smash between short and third to tie the score. Frankie Klavon won the game for the Roosters with a walk off liner to left driving in the winning run. On defense, great catches were made by Theresa, Terry L., Garito, Spadola and Ron Furst. Jake made these teams and is resolved from the fiasco of last week. Next week Mark Jacobs makes up the tems.

23 DECEMBER GAME RECAP:JAKE MADE THESE TEAMS:

In what was billed as a game of two equal teams, turned into a one sided Tiger batting practice. After a Paradiso grand salami, Tigers raced out to 16-1 lead. Roosters spent the morning looking for their bats which were never found. However, Roosters were "saved" by a late rain shower that ended the game early. And it was a lucky thing for the Tigers since the Roosters were planning a last inning rally of sixteen runs to steal the game. Owing to the rain, Tigers were able to slide off the hook and avoid a late inning Rooster comeback.

16 DECEMBER GAME CANCELED DUE TO INCLEMENT, HIGH WINDS AND ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS.

DUES: Thanks to those who have paid the dees.If you have not yet paid, pease bring $25 to the next game. Our Caloosa pitcher's safety net was stolen and replacement cost runs around $400.

09 DECEMBER GAME RECAP: Who made these teams....it was Scotty.

After a bit of final jockeying and last minute changes, the usual sides were shaken up and new teams emerged. it was nice seeing Nunzio fashioning his red shirt and Jacobs flashing his yellow shirt. Even Ron Furst wore red for the occeasion. With JR and Gregg leading the way with home runs, Roosters held 21-13 advantage going into the bottom of the ninth. Even Rooster chipped in with a bases loaded single. However, the Rooster effort was for naught as the Tigers mounted a nine run last inning and Al Fortgang's two out line drive down the left field line drove in the winning run. The line-up change was a huge success and won membership approval. Going forward, SSSA members shall be preparing future line ups. Next week, Jake has volunteered to make out the line-ups. Lipper and Jacobs are next.

MEMORIAM: Today we mourn the passing of Corky (John Corkan), one of our elder SSSA members. Always full of energy, Corky had a permanant smile on his face and a kind word for everyone. He lost his battle with cancer over the week end. In May, SSSA members raised over $3500 that went for his medical and other expenses. Awaiting news regarding funeral arrangement and wishing the family all the best. Corky was one of our most popular members and he shall be sorely missed.

02 DECEMBER GAME RECAP: Back to back to back.

This game marked the return of Jeff Weill who was sidelined wth injury over the past several months. In a great game marked by three homers in a row by Jeff Weill, Theresa and Evilio JR, the Roosters scratched back in the fifth inning to tie the score 12-12. According to Nunzio who batted right after JR., "this was a tough act to follow." Carmine was the winning pitcher who came in the sixth inning and held Tigers scoreless the rest of the way. Carmine must have been taking pitching instruction from IRA, our all time leader. Nunzio pointed out that Roosters made no errors in this game...anyone seen the video to verify? Verry made these teams and it turned out to be a great game. This week, Scotty is making the teams and volunteers for futire side making is invited.

25 NOVEMBER GAME RECAP: Harry is back.

Once again, Roosters bolted out to an early lead and earned their second strainght victory. Tigers had plenty in the tank but were held to a measly 12 runs. Roosters received offensive support from Nunzi, Theresa (4-4) and Evilio JR parking one over the left field fence. Once again Nunzi earned his wings on defense at second.

2024 SSSA Dues: Payment required by 31 January 2024. Owing to inflation, the cost of softballs and shirts have  increased 10% since last year. Hot dogs and hamburgesrs have also increased. Therefore, annual dues are increased to $25 per player. Low overhead and continued sponsor participation enables us to keep dues at low levels. Payments can be handed to Jeff Smith, Ron Furst or any Exec Committee member.

18 NOVEMBER GAME RECAP: Hang onto your wings.

Roosters began their usual early attack and raced to 14-2 lead. Just when they thought it was safe to go outside, Tiger homers by Harvey and Evilio JR served as the wake up call. Tigers have a habit of rallying late and it looked like another late inning comeback was brewing. The steady Rooster hitting of Garito, Nunzio, Spadola and Herring staved off the pesky Tigers. Rooster chipped in with a 2 run single ending a 10 year slump. In the end, several Tiger late rallies fell short and Roosters gained the victory.

11 NOVEMBER GAME RECAP: Fat lady sings.

Things were moving along famously for the Roosters after they scored 15 runs in the first three innings and led 20-8 after five innings. However, things changed quickly in bottom of the sixth when Tigers came up with 8 runs to make it a ball game. In the meantime, Rooster bats went cold and after nine innings, the score was tied 20-20. The fat landy sang when Terry L. lined to left ensuring a walk off 21-20 Tiger victory. This game marked the return of Steve LaPena who looks to be in mid season form. It was also our first veteran's Day game and much gratitude is felt for the service of our Veterans. It also also the last game Rooster can be thrown out at first after singling to right.

04 NOVEMBER GAME RECAP: Big Field Blues

Owing to Special Events, game was moved to Field #4 where Roosters were kept busy chasing down Tiger line drives in the outfield gaps. Theresa and Huston led off the game with round trippers and Fortgang and Carmine followed later. After all that, Tigers needed five runs in the fifth to knot the score 8-8. The Rooster combination of Herring, Furst, Scotty and Garito kept them in the game. However, an eighth inning five run Tiger rally sealed the deal.

28 OCTOBER GAME RECAP: Windy City balls flying everywhere.

A great day for the long ball hitters with the wind blowing straight out toward left field. Roosters held the early lead when Wallace hit a fly ball to left center that got caught in the wind currents and wounded up in the parking lot for a home run. With the score tied 15-15 after five innings, Roosters pulled away behind the heavy hitting of Nunzio (3-4) Huston (3-4), Furst, Hough, J P. Rooster chipped in with two RBI's both coming with two outs extending the innings. Tigers bats weren't enough despite strong efforts from Evilio JR, Alvarez, Billy Ray, Terry L., Mucci and Silver Star. Late inning rallies by Roosters pushed them over the top.

21 OCTOBER GAME RECAP:

Great weather continues to follow our game. Roosters jumped out to the early lead but Evilio JR paved the way for the Tigers by driving

in their first eight runs with two homers and a double. Roosters were plugging away and the score stood 13-12 going into bottom of the seventh when Roosters rallied for five runs. Alvarez and Garito cleared the fences for Roosters and Billy Ray chipped in with an insider the parker and a triple. George Hough had a monster game at midfield and at the plate. On defense, George made play after play to deflate the Tiger hopes all game. Nunzio almost cleared the center field fence and played outstanding in the field. Scotty got big hits late in the game when they counted.

14 OCTOBER GAME RECAP: Great weather, great fun.

In a low scoring game, Tigers moved into the early lead. After a dreary seven innings of scoring only five runs, Roosters spit out their corn and started hitting the ball. Four in the eighth and two more in the ninth gave them their first lead. However, the TiGERS  could not be denied and they squeezed out two in the bottom half of the ninth to earn the victory. Ron Furst had a great deay on both sides of the plate. Hough was a tough out and Garito was strong all day. Gottleib parked one over the fence for the TIGERS. Game ball to Kevin King for making a spectacular overhead running catch ending a serious Rooster rally. Unfortunately, Kevin suffered a grioin pull during the catch and will be out severl weeks.

07 OCTOBER GAME RECAP: Who made these teams?

In what started out as a Rooster rout changed quickly. Roosters were leading 19-7 behind the bats of Alvarez (long dinger) and Nunzio,

Scotty, Terry L. and Wallace. Tigers roared back with seven runs in the seventh and four more in the eight to close the score to 19-18.

Roosters clawed back with three in the ninth to grab 22-18 lead. With two out and nobody on base, Ira hit a hard smash past third starting  a Tiger rally. After Furst's single, the bases were loaded with two out and the winning run at second. Silver Star hit a hot smash to Nunzio who flipped to second for the force out finally securing the Rooster victory.

30 SEPTEMBER GAME RECAP: Rain, rain stay away.

Once again we dodged the rain and with the efforts of Ed Nassan we were able to tidy up the field and play our game. The combination of temperature and high humidity seemd to sap the energy from several players. Tigers opened an early lead but were caught by the Roosters in the fourth inning at 6-6. However, the Rooster defense was pourous and allowed too many unearned runs to cross the plate. In the end, it was the Tighers who prevailed.

TIGERS 17 ROOSTERS 13.

23 SEPTEMBER GAME RECAP: With all the big guns on the Tigers, they were heavy favorites. However, the feisty Roosters (minus Huston), fought  hard all day.  The Rooster infield was bolstered by the fancy glove work of Nunzio who made several outstanding plays on hot smashes hit to second. Nunzio started three Rooster double plays and went 2-3 at bat. In the outfield, Ed Nassan made an incredible catch at the fence off the bat of Tim Garito. For the Tigers, Garito and Alvarez did not disappoint and they smashed long dingers over the left field fence. However, their efforts were not enough against the well rounded attack of the Roosters.

16 SEPTEMBER GAME RECAP: Another beautiful day in Paradise and what a great game it was! In a low scoring affair, Roosters rallIied late and prevailed. Monster home run off the bat of Greg Alvarez was not quite enough for theTigers. This ball was hit so far and high that it could be in orbit around the globe. Both teams played outstanding defense and there were several great catches and many double plays. Monty was at his best on the mound as the Rooster offense was supported by Theresea, Huston, Furst and Rooster

HAPPY 89 BIRTHDAY IRA: And a grand birthday party it was. Commissioner had a few opening remarks about our ageless wonder. Players asked if he was old enough to know Moses? Monty read a poem he wrote for ira. Commissioner presented Ira with a new bat. Monty added a cake and the birthday boy was roasted and toasted.

09 SEPTEMBER GAME RECAP: It was a career day for Evilio JR. who played flawlessly in the field and was the batting leader. JR blasted two home runs including a grand slam and accounted for 8 RBI. Nunzio went 4-4 and was assisted by Theresa, Evilio SR, Spadola, Fiorentino and Rooster who knocked in three runs with a pair of singles. Roosters opened an early 19-7 lead and barely hung on to earn the victory.

02 SEPTEMBER GAME RECAP: Mother Nature had her way with us. After being rained out at Prince we tried Caloosa but no luck there either. Just as we arrived, the clouds opened and the game was washed out. Several of us went to The OWL COUNTRY GRILL 4953 Le Chalet Blvd., Boynton Beach. We found the food and service excellent. 26 AUGUST GAME RECAP:  Great game again on Suturday. Tigers grabbed the lead in the bottom half of the first inning and held on until the top of the eighth when Roosters wemt ahead 12-10. However, Tigers came back strong in their half of the inning with three runs and clinched 13-12 victory. Robert Maldonado is earning his wings as manager.  Defense was outstanding with each side completing 3-4 double plays.

19 AUGUST GAME RECAP: Too much Nicky or "do you have a problem with that?"

Roosters fell behind early but mounted a comeback in the fifth inning with two on and nobody out. At that point, there was a line drive to right center when Nicky came out of nowhere to make a diving catch for the put out and threw to second to complete the double play. As if that was not enough Nicky, cleared the bases in the ninth with a three run triple. Game ball to Nicky. Steady hitting by Shadwick, Tommy, Garito and Fiorentino kept Roosters on their heels all game. Tigers defense turned four double plays. Roosters suffered a scoring drought from the third through the seventh inning but fought back with five in the eighth. However, Tigers scored eight in the ninth to seal the deal.

12 AUGUST GAME RECAP: Who made these sides?

Teams scored often and many. At the end of five, score was tied 20-20. At that point, 90 degree heat became a factor and the game was shortened to 7 innings. Tigers scored 1 in the sixth and three more in the seventh to grab the lead 24-22 sending ROOSTERS into panic mode. In the final stanza, ROOSTERS rose to the task as Evilio JR lined into the left field corner tying the game and setting the stage for Ed Nassan promptly sliced a single to center, scoring JR with the "walk off" winning run.

05 AUGUST GAME RECAP: Roosters won the coin toss and it was all downhill from there. They scored four in the first inning and it was the last time they led before being pounded into ground chicken. Tigers were relentless and their diversified attack of Junior, Carmine, Silver Star, Maldonado and Smith kept pounding the ball. Nunzio was the only bright spot for the Roosters with three more hits and several more excellent plays in the field. Heed his famous words of wisdom and "don't be a hazza." This coming week marks the return of Ron Furst.

29 JULY GAME RECAP: The heavy summer air kept the ball in the park except for a long drive down the left field line by Evilio JR that cleared the fence. This game witnessed a career performance by Nunzio who was everywhere. At the plate, he went 4-4 with a bunch of RBI's. In the field he caught all the "tough ones" from line drives to short hops to blooping pop-ups. A late home run down the left field line by Theresa, padded the Rooster lead. The Tigers are still looking for their offense.

22 JULY GAME RECAP: Summertime, Summertime!

Starting early has its' benefits and we once again beat the heat by ending before 11:00 AM. Roosters were coasting along their merry way when Tigers tied the score through seven @16. In the eighth, Roosters responded with 5 runs of their own but another Tiger rally knotted things @ 21-21 going into the ninth. The bottom half of the order carried the Roosters as they rallied for three in the ninth and claimed victory.

15 JULY GAME RECAP: Ho Hum!

It was a spirited game with an excellent turn out. Our earlier starting time helped avoid the heat of the day as our game ended 10:32 AM. Tigers jumped out in the first with 5 runs only to be tied in the third. The heavy summer air kept the ball in the park. Tiger Manager Mark Jacobs has "temporarily" figured out the Roosters and I hear that his pregame "pep talks" are inspiring. Roosters led this game 10-7 until Tiger bats awoke late and scored 6 in the top of the ninth to close out the Roosters. It was good seeing Corky and Jeff Weill @ the field. Hitting by Evilio JR, Scotty, Gottleib, Verryl, Maldonado and Paradiso maintained the pressure all game.

08 JULY GAME RECAP: Tigers in control.

It was a good omen when the Roosters scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth tying the sore 16 all sending the game into extra innings. However, six Tiger runs in the tenth sent the Roosters packing. Roosters were haunted all day by errors, errors and more errors. They had several chances to win the game but failed to come up with the big play in the field.

It was a Rooster kinda' day. Roosters pulled ahead early and a Spadola bases clearing triple opened the gap and lead to a Rooster victory. Tigers bats never got going.

17 JUNE GAME RECAP: Roosters bounce back.

Things did not start well for the Tigers after Roosters notched 5 runs in top of the first. However, behind Frankie, Garito, Gottleib, Carmine, Eganthal and Paradiso, the Tigers grabbed 14-7 lead through five. Roosters clawed back following a grand slam by Greg Alvarez and a solo shot by Silver Star, the score was tied 14-14. Behind a supporting cast of Huston, Scotty, Theresa and Jeff Smith, the Roosters gained control with strong pitching by Monty. This game marked the return of Jimmy Spadola after shoulder surgery. Game was played at West Boynton.

03 JUNE GAME RECAP: TIGERS ON TOP AGAIN.

Roosters once again jumped out to the early lead 5-0 and then 11-08. However, the Tigers roared back tying the score then pushing ahead 13-11. The combination of Hair and Evilio, Jr. proved too much and Roosters dropped their fourth game out of the last five.

27 MAY GAME RECAP: TIGERS STREAK BROKEN AT 4:

The Tiger winning streak which had reached four in a row was snapped on Saturday. As usual, Roosters bolted out to the early lead then watched the Tigers claw their way back into the game. Through six innings the Rooters led 19-12. However, the Rooster bats went silent and failed to score for the rest of the game. In meantime, Tigers kept scoring and trailed by a run going into the bottom of the ninth. At that point, the strong pitching by Mark Lipper took over. Tigers could have won the game, but Lipper induced Hair to ground out to mid-field. Lipper then caught Garito looking at and Carmine flied weakly to right center ending the game.

20 MAY GAME RECAP: "IT'S NEVER OVER UNTIL IT'S OVER OR DON'T COUNT YOUR CHICKENS.

Roosters were cruising to victory after scoring 5 n the sixth to take a commanding 25-13 lead going into bottom of the inning when disaster struck. Tiger bats awoke from deep slumber and rallied for12 runs to tie the score. The big hit was an inside the park grand salami off the bat of Ed Nassan. Tigers added 5 more in the bottom of the eighth around a Nassan triple. With backs against the wall, Roosters tallied 6 in the top of the ninth to grab back the lead 31-30. However, Tigers scored two in the bottom half of the inning to clinch victory in walk off style. It was a career dayy for Nassan who earned the game ball. It was the third consecutive Tiger victory. For the Roosters, Scotty went 8-8, Alvarez homered and Nunzio and Huston drove in runs all game.Tigers led by Nissan, Carmine, James Hair, Harvey, Seth and Jacobs.

Usual game time shall revert affer the summer.

13 MAY GAME RESULT: In a well played game, Roosters grabbed 5-0 lead in top of the first inning and held on for dear life until the bottom of the eighth. There were several outstanding defensive plays and both infields turned double plays. This game marked the return to action of Evilio JR who was out with a hand injury. He responded well and smacked one over the fence. James Hair earned his Tiger claws by blasting over the fence. Roosters led 16-13 going into bottom of eighth when Tiger bats including Harvey, Jacobs, Verryl, Paradiso and Hair awoke from deep slumber. The big hit was a two run inside the park homer by Carmine who chased in both tying and winning runs. Roosters failed meekly in the ninth and final score:

06 MAY GAME RESULT: Tournament in Vero Beach cut into our numbers this week plus Richard on a cruise, Eganthal in Isreal, Kawecki injured hand and Spadola down with shoulder surgery. Game was cut short to 7 innings by shrinking numbers and injuries.

Received from Bobby Kawecki after the game.

"Went to Delray Medical after the game.and they found fractured metacarpal bone which

GREETINGS RECEIVED FROM SILVER STAR: In case you haven't seen Richard Shadwick on the field it's because he and the Mrs. are on  a dream cruise to Europe and the Mediterranean.

               Richard writes below:

"Hello my friends and greetings from the North Atlantic Ocean. I hope the Roosters prevailed today. I'll see you in

a couple of weeks, we are having a blast and arriving Ireland on Tuesday. All the best from Richard."

29 APRIL GAME RESULT: You have not seen a Rooster home run blast until you see what came off the bat of Greg Alvarez. Gregg caught the perfect pitch on the barrel and sent the ball high over the left field fence, over the trees, beyond the parking lot and onto I-95 South. The ball was last seen heading toward Miami. If we had a tape measure, that ball was a tape measure job. Not to be overlooked was the moonshot hit by James Hair that proved to be just what the doctor ordered for the Tigers. Winning Tiger Manager Mark Jacobs was gleeful after the game having suffered three straight last inning losses. I was under the impression that Mark was buying drinks all around for the joyful Tigers. Game was delayed by wet ground but with the help of our members and Emmanuel the head groundskeeper, we got things going by 9:30 AM Special thanks to Nicky who was at the field early and proactive with the field grooming. 22 APRIL THIRD STRAIGHT NINTH INNING LOSS: Score was tied through eight innings and four run Rooster outburst n top of the ninth sealed the deal. Tigers fought back but in the end it was not their day. ROOSTERS 12 TIGERS 10

15 APRIL FROM GOAT TO HERO: Mr Good Bat aka James Hair enjoyed a career day with no less than 4 homers over the fence. In all, Mr. Good Bat drove in 10 Runs. Incredibly. this effort was not enough to beat the Roosters. The Tigers managed to hold off Roosters but after seven innings, score was tied @ 15. The Rooster defense was porous with Rooster himself leading the way with error after error at first base. Roosters entered the ninth down 19-16. Steady offense all day by Silver Star, Tim Garito, Alan Eganthal, Jake, Smith, Nunzio (5 RBI's), Carmine and Ed Nassan rallied in the ninth. At that point, Rooster had the chance to redeem himself by coming to bat with the game on the line. Rooster responded with a hot  smash through the infield (his third hit of the day), scoring two runners and propelling the Roosters to 20-19 victory over an excellent Tiger team. After the Tigers went down quietly in the ninth, the victory was secured. With one swing of the bat Rooster went from Goat to Hero. Game ball to Rooster. ROOSTERS 20 TIGERS 19.

08 APRIL: NOT THE TIGERS DAY: Since the flip coin was changed, Theresa has managed to win the coin toss every time. Roosters began the game with three in the first only to be topped by five for the Tigers. Gottleib and Hair whistled long balls over the fence and before you could say "jack rabbit," Tigers jumped out to 11-6 lead. A Rooster rally knotted the score through sIx innings. Tigers clawed back with five runs but after eight innings the score was tied @16. Roosters playing a real team effort, rallied for 4 runs in the top of the ninth and held the Tigers to one lonely run in the ninth.

VENUE ALERT: On 01 July 2020 the County is closing Caloosa Fields #5 and #6 for the annual summer field renewal program. SSSA shall be temporarily re-assigned to West Boynton (Park Vista High), Lawton Childs (Civic Center) and Field 4. We shall return to Caloosa right after Labor Day.

BOBBY SPAZANTE: Today we mourn the loss of "The Spaz," or the "The Shiek", Bobby Spazante. A native New Yorker, irreverent Yankee fan and former postman, Bob was a fierce competitor who loved being on the playing field. "Level Swing," he would shout while I was on deck. Bobby understood the game and became a successful manager. After a long and courageous battle, we lost Bobby to cancer on 24 March 2023, one day short of his 72nd birthday. Funeral arrangements TBA.

GAME REPORT 25 MARCH: Two evenly matched teams duked it out to the finish. Tigers scored 5 in the top of the first and looked good out of the gate. However, in the words of their Manager Mark Jacobs, "our star studded line up couldn't get it done today and was foiled by the solid infield defense of Evilio JR and Billy Ray. The Roosters used a cohesive unit to grab the game 14-10. No balls left the yard.

GAME RECAP 11 MARCH: Not a day for the big boppers as strong wind held up the ball. It was a day for defense as there was a record of 6 infield double plays. Teams were well balanced and it took a Billy Ray hit in the bottom of the eight to seal the deal: ROOSTERS 8 TIGERS 7

WE LOST A FRIEND TODAY: It is with heavy heart announcing the passing today of Ira's wife and best friend Sara Jane Drescher. For this couple, it was love at first sight at South Florida single's party some 38 years ago. Sara Jane was a kind, gentle and beautiful soul both inside and out. Her life was not a bowl of cherries having survived the tragic loss of a daughter. With Ira firmly at her side, they raised over $42,000 for Donna's Playroom @ Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital in Hollywood, Florida. In addition to public speaking about domestic violence, they established Deborah's Fund at the Women in Distress Shelter in Broward. Funeral arrangements are in process and shall be posted here once available. You may send e-mail condolences to Ira:  Papadresch@outlook.com

GAME OPEN 04 MARCH: Please advise availability

GAME REPORT 25 FEB: And a great game it was. Two even and perfectly balanced teams duked it out until the game was decided in the bottom of the ninth. It looked like Roosters would enjoy a cake walk when they jumped out to 8-2 lead. After the Tigers tied in the fifth 8-8, Roosters came back with five runs behind key RBI hits by Lipper and Spadola to grab the lead 13-8. Two Greg Alvarez long balls was a Rooster catalyst. After a long ball by Meryl, a big hit by Harvey and some solid team hitting, Tigers found a way to grab 21-19 lead into top of the ninth. With tail feathers backed against the wall, a two out Lipper single knotted things 21-21sending the game into the bottom of the ninth. The final inning opened when Hoffman legged out a grounder to third representing the winning run. With runners on first and second, Michael Paradiso became the hero when he lined into right center field bringing home the winning run. Final Score: TIGERS 22 ROOSTERS 21

EQUIPMENT EXCHANGE: Got surplus equipment you would like to turn into cash? Equipment Exchange has been added where surplus equipment can be offered.

YOGI SAYS: "Baseball is 90% mental and the other half is physical."

GAME REPORT 18 FEB: TIGERS HAD AN OFFENSIVE TEAM CAPABLE OF SCORING 30 RUNS BUT IT JUST WASN'T THEIR DAY. ROOSTERS PLAYED AWESOME DEFENSE AND SHUT DOWN THE TIGER OFFENSE INNING AFTER INNING.MERYL POPPED ONE OVER THE FENCE FOR THE ROOSTERS AND JR DID THE SAME FOR THE TIGERS. ROOSTERS 18 TIGERS 8.

SPECIAL MESASAGE FROM IRA: "The Awards Banquet really came off so well with everyone well fed and under such scrutiny for their actions which ended with terrific jocularity. None of this could have been accomplished without the leadership of our Commissioner. In addition, our yearly playing fee of $20 is one hell of a bargain. Ron bought, cooked and served the finest 1/4 lb. hot dogs and hamburgers from Costco...no telling how much he spent. We all appreciate his great effort  in making our Saturday game EVEN BETTER. Thanks to Ron Penn for a great job..."you are the best"...From Ira...Hall of Fame and spiritual leader of SSSA.

GAME AND BANQUET 11 FEB: Although we had a great game today decided in the bottom of the ninth on a clutch hit by Billy Ray, the real highlight was the Awards Banquet (AWB).

Special awards went to Scott J who received Player of the Year for fighting the big fight and bouncing back in great form. Ira received the Hall of Fame award because his 88 year old indomitable spirit is an example for all to follow. Other awards were given in pure fun and the recipients were most gracious.

To mention a few: Let's Make a Deal Award went to Roger. Best Dressed Award to Theresa. Rookie of the Year Award to Nunzio. Chief Sitting Bull Award to Mark Lipper. Charlie Hustle Award to Jeff Smith. Mr. Cool Award to Jimmy Spadola. Nice and Easy Award to Verryl. Mr. Good Spirit Award to Jake who never gets down regardless of the score. Mr. Long Ball Award to Evilio JR who lost the most softballs over the fence. As a twist of fate, John Huston won the $50 Duncan Donut door prize, the second award this year for the King of Swat.

It was a wonderful experience bringing everyone together sharing a meal, light chatter, laughing and having much fun. I am happy doing this job and confess, "I am in it for the journey and not the destination."

Always remember:

"When the game is over and the score long forgotten, we are left with sweet memories of the game."

Special Thanks to the AWB Committee: Ira, Ron Furst, Jeff Smith, Mark Jacobs, Verryl, Jake. We could not have done it without their help. Watch here for photos coming later this week.

WEATHER ALERT GAME 04 FEB: Game canceled today due to inclement weather. It is currently raining @ Caloosa. The fields have picked up enough water to make playing conditions impossible. We try again next week...don't forget 11 Feb SSSA Awards Banquet....see you then.

AWARDS BANQUET UPDATE FEB 11: We have between 40-50 sign ups for the great SSSA Awards Banquet. Please continue signing up so we know how many to expect. The Banquet is at the Pavillion @ Caloosa Park located inside the park about 1/2 mile from the fields. Jake @ Kilwin has donated the ice cream dessert, Ron Furst

is bringing coolers for soft drinks.

28 JANUARY GAME REPORT: Although we did play a game, softball took a backseat this morning as members came forward with generous contributions on behalf of Corky who was recently diagnosed with a severe form of cancer. John Huston and Julio are collecting for the fund.

ONE OF OUR OWN NEEDS HELP:  We are advised that Corky has been diagnosed with a severe form of cancer and needs help. SSSA sponsors are contributing $250 from their own funds to kick off this fund. If you would like to make an individual contribution please hand your donation to either Ron Penn, Mark Lipper, John Huston or Julio Quesada. All contributions shall be turned over to the family for the benefit of Corky as they see fit. All individual contributions shall be mentioned on SSSA NEWS.

21 JANUARY GAMES A PERFECT 10: On the day the Golden Oldies visited SSSA, it was was a blend of perfect weather, excellent competition and great softball. Bob Hoffman and Ed Veracchi brought a game bunch of players for the challenge game. The tams were equally matched as was borne out by the final scores.

In the first game, SSSA jumped out 14-5 after five innings. As if by magic, Golden Oldies bats awoke in the sixth and seventh innings and pushed SSSA backs to the wall by leading 18-17 into bottom of the seventh and final inning. At that point, SSSA manager, Mark Lipper was quoted as saying, "No problem, we will get 2 runs and win this game." As sure as day follows night, Mark's prediction came true and SSSA pulled the game out 19-18.

In the second game, GO jumped ahead with 4 in the first and grabbed 11-4 lead after four. A seven run fifth and three more in the sixth catapulted SSSA into a short lived 14-11 lead. Not to be out done, GO countered with five in the bottom of the sixth and the rest was history since SSSA could only muster one more run. Final Score: Golden Oldies 16 SSSA 15.

Many thanks to Bobby Hoffman and Ed Veracchi for bringing such an outstanding softball team and great bunch of guys. SSSA extends an open invitation to GO for a re-match. Special thanks to umpire Harry who covered both games. Thanks to Ira who umpired on Field 5.

There was a game on Field 5 and all I heard was that Evilio JR drove one so far over the left field fence that it entered into satellite orbit and was headed toward the international space station.  Of course, I heard this from Evilio,

JR himself so it must be true!

14 JANUARY GAME CANCELED: Although we planned to start late, the combination of low temps and high winds with 30 mph gusts shall interfere with playing conditions and game is canceled.

BABE RUTH: "Never allow the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game."

07 JANUARY GAME RECAP: WOW,WOW AND DOUBLE WOW:

After 3-0 early Rooster lead, Tigers clawed back with a vengeance and after six held 16-6 lead. Roosters were having trouble figuring out the 'high balls" tossed by Huston. Weil twice, Moladonado and Evilio JR smashed some of the longest dingers on record. This game marked the return of Scotty J to the playing ranks, although it was hard to recognize him in his Dansby Swanson disguise. Roosters proved to be not just a flock of fried chickens with two runs in the seventh, seven in the eighth and four more in the ninth, tied things at 20 pushing the game into overtime. Tigers seven run tenth inning rally was highlighted by Jeff Weill dinger settling things: TIGERS 27 ROOSTERS 21.

YOGI SEZ: "Nobody goes to that restaurant anymore because the line is too long."

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2023!!

31 DECEMBER RECAP:  Back on the field after two weeks of weather delays, we celebrated New Year's with a special double header that squeezed the best out of our players including several new bees that fit perfectly. It proved to be a Tiger day as they held the Roosters by the tail all morning. In the first game, a long dinger to left by Evilio, JR and a bases clearing triple to left center by Robert M staked the Tigers to 9-4 lead into the last frame. A Rooster rally fell short when Jake's fly ball landed in the left fielder's glove for the last out stranding tying run on third. Tigers 9-8 over Roosters. Second game was a Tiger blow out as the "hit parade" kept on coming including 10 runs in the final inning all with two out, TIGERS 33 ROOSTERS 18.

10 DECEMBER RECAP: Just when Tigers thought it was safe to go outside, the Roosters finished strong with seven runs over the last three innings to earn the 19-12 victory. Evilio JR found the HR porch with two Bombzillas.

Tiger bats were well stocked but could not make it click...their base running escapades took them out of two innings

with outs recorded at home plate. We welcome new members Pat Ricci and Karl Hernandez.

03 DECEMBER RECAP: Double Header played against OLD TIMERS who came up from Miami for the Challenge. Some great softball was played. Albeit they play 50's and up, our guys hung in there and did a great job. Balls were flying over the fence all day by both sides. Many thanks to Joe V. for managing our squad.

--------------------------------

26 NOVEMBER DOUBLE HEADER RECAP:

Game 1 looked like a Tiger cakewalk as they jumped out to an early 11-7 lead through four. At that point, the Tigers stalled out not scoring in the last three innings. Meanwhile, Rooster bats garnered 5 in the fifth and two more in the sixth to earn 14-7 victory. In the second game, it was all Roosters in a game that would never end for the Tigers. Without Houston, they could not pick up a ground ball and gave Roosters extra outs almost every inning.

12 NOVEMBER RECAP: It was a Rooster kinda’ day. In the first game, Tiger bats lay dormant and only managed 4 runs through five innings. They woke up in the sixth scoring 6 runs but their rally was snuffed out by an inning ending bases loaded double play. Final score Roosters 16-10. In the second game, Tigers jumped on Roosters and had the early lead with James Hair leading the way by blasting two over the left field fence. However, Rooster bats connected for five in the bottom of the sixth to grab their first lead. Tigers went down one, two three in the seventh and Roosters had a double-header sweep. Game marked the return from injury of James Hair who was in mid -season form.

OH WHAT A GAME!!

Tigers drew first blood with 5 in the first but the lead quickly changed hands as Roosters jumped out to 15-8 lead. Tigers clawed back and trailed 18-16 going into the ninth. Before you could say "cold beer" Tigers had bases loaded, one run in and only one out. It looked like

the Roosters would be cooked.

However, Verryl on the mound induced a foul out and a pop fly to secure the Rooster victory 18-17.  It was a close call for the Rooster who avoided the frying pan.

Roosters had a well rounded attack with Furst, Garito and Shad leading the way. Nunzio, Spadola and Terry were the supporting cast.

Rainout last Saturday so let’s hope for better weather this week.

AUGUST 27 @ PARK VISTA (West Boynton Park)

We find ourselves with an odd number. Rather than buck the August heat with two games, it seems better to play one game with extra players. The numbers shall improve as we move into fall with many players returning from vacation etc. As for fields, the new permits are issued and we return to Caloosa 10 September so mark your calendars accordingly. Welcome back George Hough (call me HOW).

GAME NOW OPEN 27 AUGUST @ PARK VISTA (West Boynton Park)

Rooster is back after a great weekend in Salt Lake City. Wedding was grand, flights on time and bride was beautiful. They are now on life’s highway with the whole world in front of them.

MARK send a brief review of the game with Roosters besting Tigers 25-18. Nobody hit one over the short fence? You guys are not eating your spinach!!    Let’s try again this week.

GAME OPEN 20 AUGUST@ PARK VISTA (West Boynton Park)

AUG 13 Highlights:  Congratulations to both teams who made an all-out effort leading to a spectacular ball game on 13 August! Ira and Verryl pitched for the Tigers while Monty hurled nine innings for the Roosters. Since Monty had to leave after nine, Richie Ross pitched a scoreless tenth and became the winning pitcher.

The highlight of the day occurred before the game when all the players serenaded Ira to: “Take Me out to the Ballgame” in honor of his 88th birthday.

WHODA’ THUNK IT?: In a totally amazing game, Roosters bested Tigers in 10 innings 24-23. Since nobody could believe this game, I attached the Line Score as prepared by Umpire Harry during the course of the game. As you can see, Roosters were headed for routine victory 19-16 heading into the ninth inning. However, in spectacular fashion, Tigers woke from the dead and rallied for 7 runs taking 23- 19 lead. Thanks to key hits by Furst, Shadwick and Evilio Jr,  the Roosters fought back. When Spadola lofted a soft sacrifice fly ball to left, the tying run scored, sending the game into extra innings. In the tenth, with Ross on the mound, Roosters dodged a bullet after Tigers loaded the bases with one out and failed to score. In Roosters half, Nunzio lead off with a sharp single to right bringing Jake to the plate. Jake complied with a ground single to right and when the ball was mishandled once and then again by the Tigers, pinch runner Evilio, Jr. scored all the way from first with the winning Rooster run 24-23.

Happy Birthday: Ira 88 on 15 August

Rooster will be away on 20 August attending the wedding of my nephew Myles in Salt Lake City…you can check him out on:

www.MTailor.com for custom made clothes…incredible story about brilliant young man.

Note the following rule clarifications:

Rule 11: On infield force plays at second and third base, “it is the responsibility of the runner to avoid contact.” He may “veer” in order to achieve this outcome. The decision shall rest at the sole judgement of the umpire. In event of interference, with less than two out, a double play shall result.

August 6 Highlights:

It was two more great games on Saturday as the double header format proved worthy. The first game proved to be a home run derby with balls whizzing over the fence at amazing speed. The biggest blast came from Julio who sailed one over two left field fences. At last report it was in satellite travelling around the world. Furst, Garito and Joe V all hit dingers. With the score 11-10 in favor of Roosters, they came up with four in the sixth to seal the deal 15-11.

The second game was a bit more lopsided even though it stood 14-13 Tigers after four.

This game witnessed the most amazing catch of the year when Jake lined into the left field gap for what appeared to be a bases clearing extra base hit. However, Quickie came out of nowhere, racing to his right,  made a spectacular backhanded diving catch while flying through the air. When he landed, the ball was safely in his glove, the inning was over and the Rooster rally snuffed out. It took the heart out of the Roosters attack and they mustered only one run over the last three innings as Ira shut the door 23-14.

Aug 6, 2022: Players have been polled  and we are playing a double header. The games shall be seven innings in duration

"Winning means you had fun and did not get injured"

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We got a full house of regular players so we shall make the best out of it…these rosters are very close to last game that ended 14-13…should be another great game. We need to play 6 outfielders, 13 in the field, 3 on the bench. If we had a few more players, I could create 2 games.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT: SSSA Executive committee is pleased to announce the roll out of our very own interactive web site. It is complete (though new features may occasionally be added). Members can sign up for games, check NEWS page for rosters and game info, check out photo and video gallery, etc etc.

23 July GAME @ PARK VISTA (WEST BOYNTON PARK)

 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

July 16 review:

As Yogi might have said, “you can’t win then all.”

Thanks to Mark Lipper, Verryl  and Jake, the Saturday game morphed into two teams and turned into a home run contest with Evilio, JR going yard 4 times and John Huston flexing his muscles with three homers.

Sorry I missed these two great performances but bad cold had me sidelined the entire weekend….hoping to get out on Monday.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

SSSA: July 9 - Game review

Another great game on Saturday with Roosters prevailing 25-17. Game was marred by many Tiger errors allowing plethora of unearned runs. In two innings they could have escaped with zero runs but 5 came across each time. Tigers closed to 15-12 in the eighth but Garito 3 run blast was the dagger in the bottom half of the inning. It was a well played and fun game despite rain showers that slowed play in the third inning.
